The FIND HEADING/SUBHEADING screen
Find buttons are located to the left of the fields to which they are linked. One find button is present on the Basic Search screen and three are found on the Advanced Search screen. The first find button (Advanced & Basic) is located to the left of the "Search Phrase" field and, when clicked, will send the user to the Find Heading/Subheading screen where you may then submit up to two words and/or phrases with which to perform a search. The fields may be joined by the Boolean operators AND or OR. Also, the first field must be filled in order for a search to be submitted and the second field is optional.
In the following example, the words "back" and "pain" are entered into the two search fields. These two words will be joined by the Boolean operator AND; meaning that the search engine will try to locate headings and subheadings (Medical Subject Headings / Subheadings) with the text string of "back" AND the text string of "pain" anywhere within the word. If the Boolean operator of OR were used in it's place, the search engine would pull up more results because it would be looking for all headings and subheadings that contained the text string "back" OR the text string "pain" anywhere within the word.

The RESULTS screen
After you have decided on your search strategy, you will need to click the Submit Search button to get your results. If the search is successful, two tables will be presented to you. The first table, or the MANTIS Headings/Subheadings Table, contains terms that have been used to index the literature in the database. These terms consist of BOTH Medical Subject Headings AND our Supplemental Headings that we have created to index specific journals covered by MANTIS. The second table, or the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Table, ONLY contains MeSH terms that match your query (this table does NOT contain the supplement terms created by Action Potential, Inc., for use to index literature included in the MANTIS Database).

Using the EXPLODE and FOCUS options at the results screen
The second table includes some options to help you locate a term if the one you seek is not listed. These options are the "Explode" and "Focus" links to the right of each term listed. There is a hierarchy to MeSH, and these options allow you to work your way up the tree to a more general term (Explode) or down the tree to a more specific term (Focus) to be used. For more information on MeSH terms and their use, please follow this link.
Once you have decided on the terms you would like to have inserted into your search strategy, click on the checkboxes provided to the right of each of the terms. Upon completion, you may click on the button labeled "Add To Search" at the bottom of the page. This will send you back to your search screen (Basic OR Advanced, depending on which you started with) with those terms inserted into the Search Phrase field and separated by the Boolean operator of "OR".
